COT to review soy infant formula

The Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals (COT) in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment in the United Kingdom plans to review the health effects of soy phytoestrogens in infant diet since a substantial amount of new evidence has become available since the COT report on phytoestrogens and health was published in May 2003.  The UK government currently recommends that soy-based infant formula should only be used in exceptional circumstances to ensure adequate nutrition of infants supported by the scientific evidence.  In 2009, after an extensive review of the data the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) concluded that there is minimal concern about the safety of soy infant formula.  In response to that conclusion, the American Academy of Pediatrics submitted a formal letter to the NTP in which they expressed their view that there is negligible concern about the safety of soy infant formula.
