Soymilk associated with reduced risk of bone spurs

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic and progressive joint disease that affects people throughout the world.  Among the various joints in the human body, the knee is the most common clinically significant site of primary OA involvement.  Knee OA is a leading cause of disability among older individuals and also affects their quality of life. It is characterized by degradation

of articular cartilage, thickening of subchondral bone, and osteophyte formation  (bone spurs).  To determine whether soy affects risk of developing OA, Chinese researchers determined whether soymilk intake among 5,764 individuals was related to presence of bone spurs.  Soymilk intake was assessed using a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire and classified into three categories: never, /=once a day. After adjustment for age, body mass index, and sex, the prevalence of bone spurs decreased in the at least once per day category by nearly 50 percent.  Risk among those consuming soymilk less than once per day was intermediate between the two extreme intake groups.
